Edinburgh Napier University

             With the world becoming smaller and emergent economies becoming more interdependent , international collaborations seem to be the way ahead.Responding to needs of a 21 century academic model Edinburgh  Napier University has tied up with Sikkim Manipal University  to offer distance learning degrees to students. The collaborative venture will enable SMU MBA students get recognition by Napier for their SMU qualification . They can transfer to Scotland for one semester and get a second degree  or they can opt to study the EMU MBA in india itself.

                      The agreement entitles SMU students to receive the Certificate of Learning from Edinburg Napier Univeristy at £25 ( approx Rs . 1,800 ). This certificate of recognition  entitles a Sikkim Manipal students to get 120 credits of the Napier MBA Programme , which can be utilised to upgrade to another MBA with just one semester of further study at only one third of the normal fee. Another option for SMU students is to opt for the ENU enriched MBA by paying an extra £30 per semester.     

                           The programme with teach students theories and help them develop critical thinking skills and creativity to ensure that they are employable. However,  a  hands- on learning approach will also be inculcated among students through projects and assignments.

                In the united states , which remains the dominant force in global higher education, the leading universities are sufficiently wealthy to ride out a drop to their endowments. But state university have suffered big budget cuts and several have been overtaken in the latest rankings.

                     The united kingdom, which again provides the leading university Cambridge is yet to feel the full force of higher education budget cuts. Rise of Asian institutions one of the talking points in 2011  is undoubtedly the performance of Asian universities, 21 improve on their 2010 position, with just three moving in the opposite direction. There are 47 Asian universities in the top 300  ( two more than last year ) and 88 institutions make the top 500.

                     Hong Kong  university repeats its 2010 performance by taking the top spot in Asia, moving up one place to 22nd and increasing the gap with university of Tokyo to three places. Hong Kong university is joined by fellow Hong Kong institutions  CUHK and  HKUST  in the top 50, while HKU, university of Tokyo and National university of Singapore cement their places in the global top 30.

ST. STEPHEN'S COLLEGE 2011 PROGRAME

MANAGEMENT STUDY

          St. Stephen's College of Delhi Univerity is venturing into business education for the last time,after launching its Management Centre last week. Known as St. Stephen's Institute for Management Excellence  ( SSIME ), the institute will be offering  an Accelerated Development Programme ( ADP ) for mid - career professionals, beginning October.

         The ADP has been created in partnership with the Jones school of business at Rice University in Houston, Texas , US. The institute will offer training and conduct research in business management , with the goal of advancing best- practices for the indian business environment . SSIME, though closely allied to St. Stephen's College , will remain an independent organisation. Hence, certificates provided at the end of the four - month  Programme will not be from Delhi University.

           Rev Valson Thampus , Principal , St Stephen's College, Say,'' As the landscape of employment evolves beyond administration and professions, the need for a world - class business and entrepreneurship education has become increasingly  critical. SSIME is our response to that need. We are starting with the area in demand  mid- career professional.

                Sanjay Saigal, alumnus of the college who will serve as teh institue's director, say,  ''while teaching in the executive MBA programme of the university of California , I found that textbooks aimed at the instructors of the quantitative decision making course did not conform too well to the kind of  client - facing work I'd done for nearly 20 years in the industry. When I found that the problem of unnecessary theory extended beyond my own area, I started  working on what turned out to be the ADP programme.

               According to Saigal, SSIME, even though independent is still associated with St.Stephen's College because of the College's strength in economics and related disciplines such as history and mathematics. ''These subject provide leverage in understanding why management practices evolve, and  how new practices can best  adopted by traditional and emerging Indian business sectors. We would be able to take the help of the college  faculty in teaching these subject at our institute, ''Saigal.
